Miami Dolphins Fire Coach Flores - A Fans View

This pertains to the firing of Miami Dolphins Brian Flores by owner Steven Ross on January 10, 2022, the day after their season was over. This was written before ANY real info came out about the firing, instead, relying on the casual yet passionate observer's experience, and why we go back for more.

This news is bad for Fins Fans on a much larger scale than it seems. Ross now has a documented record of hiring and firing as I will explain with facts from recent history, loosely interpreted, and logical hypothesis of coming events.

To me, Flo was like… SOLID… he had that Tomlin/Cowher/Bud Grant kind of persona. I LOVED him and his players did too. I was quite happy to say, “what ever Flo thinks, I’m good with”. I would play for Flo! But this isn’t about our beloved Flo. This is about that poor, yet-to-be-named fellow they’re going to hire to replace him. Has no idea that in 3 years, he’ll be fired for losing the coin toss in OT at the Super Bowl because the other team ran the kick off back to end the game. That yet-to-be-named coach, who was on top of the world not 24 hours earlier, will be fired before he gets to the handshake circle. An interim HC is named just in time to step in and shake hands with the other coach. When asked about the firing after the game, Steven Ross dumped Gatorade on himself and explains, “Well it’s clear he did NOT met the objectives set forth in our initial agreement 3 years ago, Super Bowl... or you GO!” The reporter asks, “so how’s that strategy working for you Mr. Ross?” Then, he abruptly turns and runs off the field, proclaiming HIS team actually won, pumping raised fists and shouting “Make America Great Again”...

Yeah, I can see it unfold right before me.

Of course I kid, but this is a PATTERN that spells long term SADNESS for fins fans. This isn’t just about the obligatory 3 year rebuilding process/cycle that we’ve become accustomed to. We’ve been in this spin cycle for 10-15-270 years now? I’ve lost all sense of time and space at this point. How many coaches 3-5-17…? Wasn’t Dan Campbell in there at one point? Why do we keep coming back for more?

Because we are anesthetized by our aqua and orange tinted glasses… “THIS is the year for SURE!” we say gleefully clutching our programs... only to realize that we’re out of the playoffs and our season is over, in week 4. We slump down in our $185 stadium seat as it sinks in that our own fandom got us again. After the game, and 3 weeks of rehab, we then spend a few lonely months in deep, deep depression. Pain. Dark places. No one comes in, we don’t go out... you know the drill. But then, you hear a rumor... then you check a lead… and your ‘inside guy’ gives a thumbs up… and you watch some video… and your eyes light up…. “we might GET this guy!!!” you say, thankful that something ‘football’ was back in your life if only for a moment. You remember the smell, the texture, the expense… you let it waft back into, until you SNAP out of it and remember that you’ve been stung before, very recently, and that your own wonton love for your team has blurred your otherwise keen vision again. I mean, this is the reason you now have a 9 inch beard and you haven’t shaved your balls since xmas. But you’re good, you're under control, you got this. Then free agency… draft day… and we’re all goners again. Before we know it, we’re right back in it, in the back alley with the dregs of society shouting “BABY NEEDS NEW SHOES!"

This is the ACTUAL pattern that we’re living with Ross, until he croaks.

So tomorrow morning, with no stubborn smart people in his way, he goes and spends all of Flo’s draft capital on Watson. Next season, Watson finally starts in game 6 (legal issues you know) for a 1-5 team with Fitzpatrick at the Q. Watson goes 4-12 for 13 yards and 2 picks in the first half and does not return for the 2nd due to Planters Faceiotous or some lame weird sounding shit that I have no hope of spelling. He’s out for 6 more weeks. He comes back in time to play a few meaningless games - just well enough for them not to kill him, so he can keep showing up for that guaranteed paper. And we’ll say, 4-13 is not good, but we went 3-2 in our last 5! And around we go.
